Why Strength and Conditioning Is Important For Baseball
The biggest reason that strength and conditioning is important for baseball is quality reps.
Forget for a minute that you aren’t strong enough to swing a bat fast enough to hit a 95 MPH pitch.
Are You Strong Enough To Practice Hitting?
You see, conditioning doesn’t just allow an athlete to be better at their sport because they are physically superior, it allows them the chance to train their sport aggressively enough to get better.
We just had an athlete that trained with us for a long time return from a hiatus. From early in high school through the fall of his freshman year of college, this athlete trained with us multiple times per week.
He then went away and trained using his schools program: tons of conditioning, little power or usable strength training.
The athlete that returned to me was weaker and exhausted from the program he was in. The problem had started to show up in his performance. Power was down. Speed was down. Performance as a whole, had suffered.
During a conditioning session with me, I told him that his regression was going to impact his performance the most, because he couldn’t practice at elite levels for long.
Sure, you put this kid in a 10 pitch batting practice, he looks like a god. Add the volume of training necessary to drive pitches in game over the wall and his strength and conditioning aren’t good enough to practice well enough.
If You Can’t Practice Like an Elite Player, You Can’t Become Elite
Taking 200 ground balls a day is great, but if only the first 10 are done with the speed and coordination necessary to play well, those last 190 are just conditioning, and aren’t moving the needle UP.
This is why what we do builds better players in conjunction with the baseball facility we work alongside.
We give them athletes that can perform better in their lessons. Get more out of practice, and do it consistently.
So if you are looking to get better at your sport, at least be in shape enough to practice at a level to get better.
Otherwise you’ll be just another guy.
